Club Bottom Fishing Trip

On Saturday, May 15, 2010, 58 club members and their guest boarded a luxury bus at 5:30am in Palm Coast. They travel south on I-95 to Port Canaveral for a full day of fishing aboard the Canaveral Star II an 85 foot bottom fishing boat.

On the ride out to the fishing grounds we were treated to a cooked breakfast consisting of an egg, bacon or sausage sandwich with cheese, donuts, cookies and drink.

Around noon the galley once again came to life with cheeseburger with chips, hot dogs, water, soda or beer. As we moved from fishing hole to the next hot fishing spot fish were being caught with a number of brake offs of some of the larger fish. John Willis caught a 5 pound flounder which was second place in the fishing pool. Mike Vickers had a Kingfish that weighted 5lb 1oz to take first place. Paul Bergeron won the bottom Rod and Reel.

We were back at the dock at 5:00pm, everyone boarded the bus for the ride back home and I ’m sure a much needed nap on the way home.

Water Restriction on ICW Meeting The Florida DEP is considering a petition to reclassify the waters of the Intracoastal Waterway, in St. Johns County from Marker 29 to Marker 109 in Flagler County, to OFW (Outstanding Florida Waterway). This is a very stringent water quality classification that has potential far reaching ramifications affecting property rights, boating rights and fishing rights. This process is very close to being a "done deal". The DEP has agreed to a second public workshop on April 13 @7:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers, City of Palm Coast Community Center, 305 Palm Coast Parkway Northeast. Apr 11, 2010 N/A N/A

Capt Michael Vickers Fishing Report Flagler County Fishing Report    Johnny at the pier says that has been a good number of whitting and bluefish on an early bite  and that the big drum 30/50lbs should be in the next week or so, the same is so on the surf and should run Thur the month of March, over on the inter-coastal waterway side with water temp in the low to mid 50's fish have been hard to find, but there are schools of redfish up by the inlet and Devils Elbow with some trout mixed in ( REMEMBER TROUT SEASON IS CLOSED UN TILL THE END OF THIS MONTH ), The best way to get these fish to bite this time of year  is to use live shrimp or mud's and tie your hook to your fishing line do not use a leader line, your fishing line should be no more than 6-8lb test. Offshore some of the guys that can get out and run 30-40 miles off are catching a few  Dolphin Wahoo and Sails .  F Y I , for those how look at the weight sheet for the year long tournament, you will notice that a few of our Lady anglers have been weighting in some nice fish , and I have been put on notice that they will get one of jacket this coming year.         Feb 18, 2010 N/A N/A

Fishing Report for Flagler

Inshore: The Redfish are starting to school up in the flats on an in coming tide (best if it is in the afternoon with a temperature raise). Remember to work your bait slowly because of the low water temperatures the fish are moving slowly. Also there has been some good action on Trout in the deeper holes on an outgoing tide.

Surf and Pier: The Blue Fishing and Whiting have moved into the surf with catches between 20 to 30 fish. Using cut mullet for Blues and shrimp or sand flees for Whiting.

On the Pier in Flagler Beach there have been some big Drum hit the planks along with a few flounder as well as Blues and Whiting.

At Dead Lake on the West side of the County. The Specks are in the channels and are being caught trolling or drifting slowly with minnows or small jigs.

Weigh Masters Report

I would once again thank Mike McCray for doing a great job as Weight Master for the last three years.

Willie reports that at Bings Landing they have been catching some Drum and Blue Fish off the docks. Willie is co-owner of Bings Bait Shop and they now have live and dead shrimp, mud minnows as well as offshore bait. Redfish & Drum are biting around the inlet and Devils Elbow.

Outside the inlet the Cobia bite is still on. I’ve had reports of 2 to 3 fish per boat. So lets get out there and catch you some.

New State license law as reported in the Daytona Beach News-Journal on June 12, 2009:

Florida resident saltwater anglers fishing from shore, docks or jetties will need to have the new “shoreline fishing license” by August 1 if they don’t have a regular resident saltwater fishing license.

In addition to the regular recreational saltwater license exemptions, the new shoreline license exempts anglers drawing food stamps, temporary cash assistance or Medicaid; and anglers fishing in their home counties who use cane poles or other gear that does not depend on mechanical retrieval.

The new license costs $7.50, but will cost $15.00 to $25.00 in 2011.

The annual surf tournament was held on June 13, 2009 at Varn Park. We had 50+ people attend, the fishing was slow but it was a nice day a little on the warm side. The winners were; Biggest Fish John Alvarez (guest of Paul Bergeron) 2lb Bluefish won him $100.00 2nd Biggest Fish Richard McCleery 8oz Whiting $75.00 Most Fish Jim Alongi 7 Whiting won him $100.00 and the 2nd Most Fish went to Mary Sloss with 3 Whiting for $75.00.

Matanzas Jim McCartney won the surf rod & reel combo and graciously donated it back to the club and new member Mark Zander won $65.00 in the 50/50. We need to thank Ron Gorney, Bill and Jo Sombathy, Rita McCray and all those who helped carry things to the beach in the morning and to all those that stayed and carried things to the parking lot after the tournament was over.

In the clubs effort to continually improve our tournaments for club members we are going to look in to moving the surf tournament to the River to Sea Preserve (Marineland) next year.
