Be on the look out for Aliens One of City of Palm Coast Engineering & Stormwater Department’s concerns is the health and biodiversity of our freshwater man-made canals. There are many species of fish known to be in our canals; both native and non-native. We really do not have an accurate inventory of the fish population in City canals. Of particular concern are non-native species that may be found in our freshwater canals. Some non-native species are beneficial; some are not. A beneficial species that we have introduced to our canals to control aquatic weed growth is the triploid (sterile) grass carp, and we replenish our carp population approximately every couple of years. This species is there to keep our canals clean; please leave them to do their job. We have had an unconfirmed report of a serious predatory non-native species from China called a “Snakehead” that may have been caught in one of our canals. Read More... Kids fishing clinic Success!
Saturday July 16, 2011, the Flagler County Sportsfishing Club along with  Florida Wildlife Commission and Fish Florida conducted our second annual Kid's Fishing Clinic.  We had a great turnout of 187 children accompanied by their parents.  They all learned how to tie knots, basic tackle, how to cast a rod and reel, how to throw a cast net after which they were given a free rod and reel and tackle box.  They could then take their new rod and reel and go fishing off one of the piers at Bings Landing.  Most every kid caught fish consisting of whiting, pompano and flounder.

We would like to thank Flagler Bait & Tackle for donating a case of bait for the kids to use fishing.  The rods and reels and tackle boxes were all donated by Fish Florida.  Thank you Chris from West Marine for the donation of Frisbee, kids life jackets, and two fishing poles for raffles.  Special thanks to Wendy for the Hellsbay Boatworks backpacks (200).  Hawaiian Tropic donated suntan lotion and lip balm.

We had 38 volunteers turn out for the event.  Special thanks to Don Martin and his crew from the Halifax Sport fishing Club for their help.  And the crew for Coastal Angles Association for their help.  A very big THANK YOU to the 32 members from our club without who this event would not have been such a success.  Nancy Fisher from FWC (Florida Wildlife Commission) has already spoken about doing this again next year.

On August 6, 2011 (Saturday) we will be taking a child and parent fishing.  We currently have eight captains which means we will draw eight names from the 187 kids that attended the clinic.  The child along with his or her parent will board one of the eight boats for a fishing trip from 8am to 11am departing from Bings.  Upon returning to Bings we will have lunch.  Any member who would like to volunteer to take a child and parent fishing on that day please call Chuck Gleichmman at 407-257-8233.

Redfish

The Commission approved draft rules presented by FWC staff at the Commission meeting in February 2011.  The approved draft rules include increasing the red drum bag limit from one to two red drum in the two northern areas of Florida, applying bag limits on land adjacent to fishing sites, and creating a statewide vessel limit of eight red drum.

The Commission postponed ruling on the red drum rule modifications until November 2011.  FWC staff will review the proposed rule modifications at the November 2011 Commission meeting in Key Largo following the red drum stock assessment report.
